What is a limb lengthening surgery?

Most people (especially men) wish they were taller. Leg-lengthening surgery (also referred to as limb-lengthening) is a radical cosmetic procedure that can make short peoples’ wish to be taller come true. A growing number of people (mostly men) are pursuing this type of operation in the different countries, especially in the USA, India and Russia. Leg-lengthening is gaining in popularity because it gives people the chance to gain a few inches in height.

Limb lengthening is achieved using the body’s own capacity to create new bone as well as the soft tissues, ligaments, blood vessels, and nerves that surround and support it. The process begins with an operation in which the orthopedic surgeon cuts the bone to be lengthened. The limb (usually the upper or lower leg) is then stabilized using one of several different external and/or internal fixation devices or frames. Continued growth of new bone tissue is accomplished by adjusting pins in the frame four times a day, for a total of 1 millimeter a day. As the space between the ends of the bone opens up, the body continues to produce new tissue in the gap until the desired length of bone has been generated. Orthopedists also perform leg lengthening and/or shortening surgery to treat some people who have legs of unequal lengths, correct any deformity that may be present, such as a misalignment of the bone resulting from trauma. Early on in this phase, patients learn to walk with the aid of crutches.

What are the methods of limb lengthening?

a) Precice method: This method is used in Turkey by few doctors. Motor-driven narrow is fitted in the bone. It is non-visible from outside. The extension actualizes with remote-control. Most comfortable method. But it is not recommended to walk via pressing your legs in that lengthening period. This is the most expensive method. It may up to both two legs 40 000 euro.

b) LON method: This method is common used last years. The device does not stay at your legs for a long time like the classic methods and it is more flexible in terms of price. You will get rid of the device in 3-4 months, in 4-5 months you will recover and in 6-7 months you will back to normal life. Surgery cost depends on a doctor. For example, A doctor does LON for 18 000 euro, while B doctor does that method for 20 000 euro. Leg Lengthening surgeries take your time, but finally you will able to recover your health and do any kind of sport. The time that you need to spend is up to the method that you have chosen. For one séance, 6-8 cm extension is available. You can also extend both lower and upper legs and grow 12-15 cm, it is up to you. Flexibility of your legs during extension period is important.

c) Holy fix method: The device used in this method is attached to only one side of the leg. Compared to Ilizarov, it is more comfortable and less risky for infection. Price is cheaper than LON method and Precice and more expensive than Ilizarov. Consolidation period takes approximately 10-12 months for this surgery.

d) Ilizarov method: The Ilizarov Method is a successful orthopaedic surgical technique designed to lengthen or straighten bone and soft tissue, also this method is widely used to treat complex and/or open bone fractures. This method is preferred over conventional treatment options (such as internal fixator or cast) where there is a high risk of infection or the fracture is of such severity that internal fixators are unworkable. Narrow nails are put in legs through cyclic iron. This method less comfortable, in comparison with new methods. And more painful. This is the cheapest method.
